Description
Adored for its vibrant foliage throughout the spring, summer, and fall, Bonanza Gold is a dwarf, dense, mounding Barberry that glows in the landscape with brilliant golden-yellow foliage throughout the season, developing subtle orange shades in the fall. The soft, yellow flowers are small and inconspicuous, but they are loved by butterflies and beneficial pollinators. They are followed by bright red berries that birds will enjoy. The thin branches are spiny, so this is a shrub you don’t have to worry about pets or other critters messing with. However, you won’t have to worry about touching this plant, as it is extremely low-maintenance and never requires trimming. Very easy to grow, it thrives in as much sun as you can provide, handles cold temperatures down to -30°F, and exhibits high drought tolerance once established. At only about 18 inches tall and 3 feet wide, it makes for a fine accent in small garden spaces, or groupings, or as a low hedge where space allows. Its low water needs make it perfect for rock gardens and the xeriscape. That said, it performs well in moist soils as long as they are well-drained.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing to 18 inches tall and 3 feet wide, the Bonanza Gold Dwarf Barberry is ideal for use as a colorful accent in smaller garden spaces or groupings, or a low border or hedge in sunny landscape borders and home foundation plantings. A fine addition to yellow theme gardens, rock gardens, and xeric gardens (low water needs).Â
Bonanza Gold Barberry combines well with sedums, junipers, ornamental grasses, yucca, and other drought-tolerant plants that thrive in sun and well-drained soil.
Suggested Spacing:Â 2 to 2.5 feet for solid hedges, 4’+ for space between plants

Growing Preferences
The Bonanza Gold Dwarf Barberry is exceptionally easy to grow in most any moist to lightly moist well-drained soil of average to low fertility and all the sun you can give it. We recommend 6 hours or more of direct sunlight for optimal foliage color. It is very drought-tolerant once established. As with many other ornamental landscape shrubs, Barberry does not tolerate constantly soggy or wet soil, so well-drained soil is essential. We’ve seen no insect or disease problems. No pruning required.
