Description
Exceptionally versatile, the Elegans Boxwood is one you can let grow naturally to its open and elegant pyramidal form, or it can be sheared tightly into interesting topiary shapes, including globes, pyramids, columns, mounds, or ovals. It features bright, variegated foliage with oval, evergreen leaves that have dark blue-green centers surrounded by a broad white margin. From a distance, the plant will appear nearly white in partial shade. If exposed to full sun or afternoon sun, the leaves will take on a soft-yellow cast. If left to grow naturally, the plant will grow to around 5 feet tall and 3 to 4 feet wide at its base. However, it can be maintained at half that size with annual spring trimming, which removes about half the length of its new growth. Very easy to grow and adaptable, Elegans Boxwood is a terrific accent or focal point in small garden spaces. You can use two to frame an entrance or several in a grouping or colorful hedge.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing in an upright pyramidal form from 4 to 6 feet tall and 3 to 4 feet wide at its base, depending on pruning, the Elegans Boxwood is ideal as an accent or focal point in small garden spaces, and a fine centerpiece in containers and surrounded by ivy or other grouncover plants, or seasonal flowers. In larger spaces, it can be grouped or planted and maintained as a formal hedge. It also responds well to trimming for tight formal shapes such as a pyramid, square, or globe. It is a fine addition to white theme gardens and formal gardens, but also nice left to grow naturally in woodland borders.Â
Suggested Spacing:Â 2.5 feet apart for solid hedge; 6 feet or more apart for space between plants
Growing Preferences
The Elegans Boxwood is easy to grow in most soil types, as long as the soil is moist but well-drained. Once established, it is quite drought-tolerant. It will grow in full sun or shade. However, the brightest white foliage occurs in part shade or shade. In full sun or when it receives direct afternoon sunlight, the leaves may turn yellow. It responds very well to trimming or shearing for hedges or shaping purposes.
