Description
Named after the beloved character in Thomas Hardy’s novel ‘Far from the Madding Crowd’, beginning in spring and reblooming almost continuously through fall, ‘Gabriel Oak’ is an English Shrub Rose with stunning blooms of a color that are nearly impossible to accurately describe or capture with a camera. The rosette blooms with over 120 petals are a striking shade of deep magenta pink with the outer petals becoming lighter with age for a spectacular two-tone effect. The blooms have a strong fruity fragrance and are excellent for cutting and display in a vase or floral arrangements. A vigorous rose with a shapely rounded form to 4 feet tall and equally as wide, and dark green foliage and contrasting mulberry purple stems, Gabriel Oak is a magnificent selection giving the overall impression of richness and abundance in gardens beds or in containers situated on or around sunny patios and other outdoor living spaces where the colorful blooms and delicious fragrance can be enjoyed from close up throughout the season.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing to 4 feet tall and equally as wide, the Gabriel Oak English Shrub Rose is ideal for use as an accent, in groupings or as a hedge in sunny borders and garden beds. Its smaller stature makes for a good fit in containers that can be situated on or around patios, decks and around other outdoor sitting and living spaces. A fine addition to cottage gardens, pink or red theme gardens, cutting gardens and fragrance gardens.
Growing Preferences
The Gabriel Oak English Shrub Rose is easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained soil of average or above average fertility and full to mostly sun for the best flowering. As with all other roses, morning sun is a must to dry dew from the leaves but some light afternoon shade or filtered sun is okay. Flowering will be best if the plant receives at least 6 hours of direct sun during the day.Â
