Description
If you love the beautiful texture and form of upright pyramidal Cryptomeria but haven’t had room for such a large tree, meet ‘Giokumo’, a semi-dwarf but vigorous selection. It has a stout trunk and adds only 8 to 10 inches or so in size per year, eventually forming a dense pyramid to only 10 feet tall and maybe 7 feet wide at its base when all grown up. The branchlets are clothed in dark green, spirally-arranged, awl- shaped needles that curve inward, creating a thick, dense habit. Contrasting new growth emerges bright green. It sports persistent, cinnamon-colored decorative female cones about 3/4″ inch long for extra appeal. In exposed areas of USDA Zones 6-9 (where it is hardy), the foliage takes on an attractive orange to coppery tint during the winter months, particularly when exposed to wind. Very low maintenance and easy to grow, Giokumo is an attractive evergreen specimen or spaced grouping in smaller landscape and garden spaces where it also serves as the perfect size, no-maintenance, outdoor Christmas tree. Also nice for a mid-size privacy screen around outdoor sitting and living spaces where space is limited.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing in an upright pyramidal form 10 feet tall and maybe 6 to 7 feet wide at its base, the Giokumo Cryptomeria is ideal for use as a focal point specimen in smaller landscape spaces. It is a very nice accent tree in home foundation plantings where it can be used to frame an entryway or corner or between spaced windows. Also nice as a solo or mixed with trailing plants in container gardens. A fine addition to conifer gardens, rock gardens and Japanese and Asian themed gardens. or in containers, where it landsmixed border, use on seacoasts, as a privacy screen or backdrop for perennial or rose gardens or contrasting seasonal shrubs, planted in small groves and planted at the sunny edge of woodlands.
Spacing Recommendations:Â 8 feet or more apart for space between plants
Growing Preferences
Cryptomeria is very easy to grow and virtually no maintenance. Giokumo has great resistance to insects and diseases, as well as improved hardiness and general ease of growth. It is adaptable to many soil types preferring a fertile, moist but well-drained soil in full sun to part shade. We suggest 5 hours or more of direct sunlight per day. As with many other ornamental trees it does not like a constantly soggy or wet soil, nor an always dry one, though trees have moderate drought tolerance when well established, though will appreciate supplemental water during extended periods of summer drought. Feed in spring with a well-balanced shrub and tree food that contains iron. No pruning will be necessary.Â
