Because his season of bloom is earlier in the season, the North American native Jim Dandy Winterberry Holly is a great stud of choice for many early flowering female winterberry holly varieties such as such as Afterglow, Berry Heavy, Berry Nice and Red Sprite. He’ll make sure these beauties are sporting their red bling in winter. Jim Dandy grows in an upright rounded shape 4 to 6 feet tall and equally as wide thriving in full sun to part shade and consistently damp to even wet soils. His handsome leaves are a lustrous dark to medium green turning to shades of purple and yellow in fall.

Winterberry hollies are very easy to grow in consistently moist to wet acidic soils of average or better fertility. They are adaptable to both light and heavy soils and grow well in poorly drained soils including boggy, wet conditions. Generally one male winterberry holly will be sufficient for pollinating 5 to 10 female plants within 100 feet. Flowers are born on new growth so you can prune to shape in late winter prior to emergence of new growth.
