Description

Recipient of the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society Gold Medal Plant Award, ‘Korean Fire’ has demonstrated unusually good winter hardiness for a Camellia japonica variety. It is typically hardy growing outdoors with no injury where winter low temperatures can go to -10F. Not only is Korean Fire among the most cold hardy of all Camellias, it is also one of the most floriferous. In late winter to mid spring (depending on location), this beauty displays a showstopping profusion of fragrant, single, 3 to 5 inch wide red-flowers with prominent, showy yellow stamens. The flowers stand out nicely against glossy dark green foliage on an upright shrub or small tree 10 to 15 feet tall and 7 to 8 feet wide when all grown up. An eye-catching specimen in the landscape and the flowers are great for cutting and use in your favorite vase.

Landscape & Garden Uses

A taller growing Camellia with an upright habit of growth to about 10 to 15 feet tall and 7 to 8 feet wide at maturity, Korean Fire can be grown as a shrub or small tree. As a shrub, it is ideal for use as specimen, in groupings or as a hedge or background plant and is perfect for espalier (trained to grow flat against a wall.) As it grows taller lower branches can be removed to form a highly attractive small evergreen tree that serves well as a focal point specimen in landscape borders and home foundation plantings. A fine addition to camellia gardens, red theme gardens, cottage gardens, cut flower gardens and partially shaded woodland borders.

Growing Preferences

Camellia adapt well to various soil types however prefer a moist but well-drained acidic soil that is rich in organic matter. Constantly soggy soil is a slow killer. In general, Camellia grows and blooms better in partial shade with some shelter from the hot afternoon sun. Morning sun with afternoon shade or filtered sunlight is perfect. All-day filtered sun is fine.
