Description
One of the most cold hardy of white flowering Camellia cultivars, originating in the northern range of Korea, ‘Korean Snow’ can handle temperatures from 0 to 5F as far north as USDA Zone 6b. Heralding the arrival of spring, in late winter (late February in our gardens) simplistically beautiful, glowing 3 to 4 inch single flowers with pure white petals surrounding a prominent cylinder of golden yellow stamens begin to emerge and continue through early spring. The blooms stand out remarkably well against foliage of dark green glossy leaves that are rounded at the tips rather than pointed, and are excellent for cutting and display in a vase or floral arrangement. At 8 to 12 feet tall and 6 to 8 feet wide, Korean Snow is a good fit for small to medium size gardens or as espalier or a corner plant in home foundation plants. As it grows taller lower branches can be removed to form a highly attractive, small evergreen flowering tree.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 8 to 12 feet tall and 6 to 8 feet wide, the Korean Snow Camellia can be grown as a large shrub or small tree. As a shrub it is ideal for use as a specimen in small to mid-size garden spaces or in groupings, or or as A hedge or background plant in larger landscape borders. It is especially nice as a corner plant or espalier (trained to grow flat against a wall) in home foundation plantings. As she grows grows taller lower branches can be removed to form a highly attractive small evergreen tree that serves well as a colorful specimen in landscape borders and home foundation plantings. A fine addition to camellia gardens, white theme gardens, cottage gardens, cut flower gardens and woodland borders. Also suitable for containers.
Spacing: 5 feet apart for solid hedge; 10 feet or more apart for space between plants
Growing Preferences
Camellia adapt well to various soil types however prefer a moist but well-drained acidic soil that is rich in organic matter. Constantly soggy soil is a slow killer. In general, Camellias grow and bloom better in partial shade with some shelter from the hot afternoon sun. Morning sun with afternoon shade or filtered sunlight during the afternoon is perfect. All-day filtered sun is fine.
