Description
‘Snowcicle’ is a new Oakleaf Hydrangea selection with enormous 12 to 14 inch long panicles of double flowers that open to a creamy white and then age to beautiful combination of rose-red, pink, olive green and cream, all on the same panicle! The flower panicles are held on sturdy stalks above and around the 6 foot tall and wide mound of attractive foliage. The large, dark green oak leaf shaped leaves turn brilliant shades of orange to deep burgundy throughout fall and persist well into winter in the South.Â
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing in a mound 5 to 6 feet tall and wide, the Snowcicle Hydrangea is ideal for use as a specimen, grouped in clusters, or as a colorful hedge that provides year round color and interest in the landscape. It is right at home in partly shaded woodland borders. Also a fine addition to white color themed gardens, cut flower gardens, cottage gardens and tropical-look gardens.
Suggested Spacing:Â 4 to 4.5 feet apart for solid hedge;Â 9 feet or more apart for space between plants
Note:Â For our customers who live and garden north of USDA Cold Hardiness Zone 5a, where this Hydrangea variety is not reliably winter hardy, you’ll be happy to know that it can be grown in containers that can be brought indoors during winter and place back outside when temperatures warm up in spring.
Growing Preferences
Snowcicle Oakleaf Hydrangea is exceptionally easy to grow and resistant to pests and diseases. It thrives in any location from full sun to part shade in moist, rich, well-drained soil. In hotter climates of the South some afternoon shade or lightly filtered sun is recommended.
Note: Oakleaf hydrangeas typically require little to no pruning. They are best left alone. That said they can be pruned to remove a stray branch or to reduce size. Snowcicle is a Hydrangea quercifolia (oakleaf) species that produces its flowers from buds that formed on “old wood” (during the previous year).Â
