Description

Deservedly winning numerous awards over the years, Sparkling Burgundy is one of the best fall-blooming Camellias and an all-time favorite of ours and guests who visit the gardens. LOADS of gorgeous pinkish-lavender colored double blooms are produced over a long period during fall. The semi-weeping habit and glossy, dark green foliage make it an exceptional evergreen shrub or small tree for landscape borders and foundation plantings. Excellent for espalier!

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing 8 to 12 feet tall and 6 to 8 feet wide (depending on pruning), the Sparkling Burgundy Camellia can be grown as a shrub or small tree. As a shrub, it is ideal for use as a specimen, in groupings, or as a hedge or background plant in landscape borders, and is especially lovely as a corner plant or espalier (trained to grow flat against a wall) in home foundation plantings. As this Camellia grows taller, lower branches can be removed to form a beautiful, small evergreen tree that serves well as a colorful focal point specimen in landscape borders and home foundation plantings. A fine addition to camellia gardens, pink or lavender/purple theme gardens, cottage gardens, cut flower gardens, and woodland borders.

Suggested Spacing: 5 to 6 feet apart for solid hedge; 14 feet or more apart for space between plants

Growing Preferences

Camellias adapt well to various soil types; however, they prefer a moist but well-drained, acidic soil rich in organic matter. Constantly soggy soil is a slow killer. In general, Camellias grow and bloom better in partial shade with some protection from the hot afternoon sun. Morning sun with afternoon shade or filtered sunlight is perfect. All-day filtered sun is fine.
