Description
An absolutely beautiful reblooming Mountain Hydrangea, Tuff Stuff ‘Top Fun’ features abundant, large, bold and beautiful lacecap flower clusters that keep coming all summer long and into fall atop bright burgundy stems. Surrounding the dome of soft-green tiny fertile flowers, the large sterile florets can range from blue to pink depending on soil pH – you choose the color. Aluminum sulfate can be applied to turn pink flowers to purple. Pelletized agricultural lime can be applied to turn purple flowers to pink. The flowers attract butterflies and hummingbirds and are excellent for cutting and use in floral arrangements. The large, leathery, dark green leaves provide a wonderful backdrop for the flowers and turn an attractive burgundy-purple in fall. A very tough but pretty Hydrangea that can take the heat and cold (-30F).
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 2 to 3 feet tall and wide in a rounded mound, Tuff Stuff Top Fun Hydrangea is ideal for use as an accent in small garden spaces or home foundation plantings, or in groupings or as a low natural hedge in landscape and woodland borders. It is also lovely in containers situated on patios, porches, decks, and around other outdoor sitting and living spaces. A fine addition to hydrangea gardens, cutting gardens, cottage gardens, and pink or purple theme gardens.
Suggested Spacing: 2 to 2.5 feet apart for solid hedges; 5 feet or more apart for space between plants
Growing Preferences
The Tuff Stuff Top Fun Hydrangea is easy to grow in moist but well-drained soil with average fertility and full sun to part shade in northern zones and part shade (morning sun with afternoon shade or filtered sun) in hotter southern zones. We suggest 4 hours or more of direct sunlight per day for best flowering. As with so many other ornamental plants, a constantly soggy or waterlogged soil is problematic. Flower color is your choice. Acidic soils will make blue flowers while a neutral to slightly alkaline soil will make pink flowers.
