Description
All of our Clematis vines are trellised 2-year-old plants in a 1-gallon pot.
Released in 1954 and winner of the Award of Garden Merit by the Royal Horticultural Society, ‘Will Goodwin’ is a magnificent large-flowered Clematis and one of our all-time favorites since planting and growing in our gardens decades ago. It features a profusion of showy 6—to 10-inch flowers with soothing, light lavender-blue wavy-margined, overlapping petals surrounding a cluster of creamy yellow anthers. Truly stunning in bloom, its first round of flowers starts in late spring to early summer from buds that formed during the previous year’s growth, then reblooms in late summer through early fall on new growth. At 8 to 12 feet tall when all grown up, Will Goodwin is excellent for growing on a fence, trellis, arch, post, tall obelisk, or any other structures its bones can climb and twine around. Sure to be a consistent performer and eye-catching showstopper.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Climbing 8 to 12 feet in height with a spread of 3 to 4 feet or more, Will Goodwin Clematis is ideal for growing on a trellis, fence, tall obelisk, up and over an arch, or any other structures it can climb. It is also suitable for containers on or around patios and other outdoor sitting spaces where its beautiful flowers can be enjoyed up close and is a fine addition to Clematis gardens, blue or purple theme gardens, cut flower gardens, and butterfly and hummingbird gardens.
Suggested Spacing: 3 to 4 feet apart to cover fences, trellises, or walls
Growing Preferences
The Will Goodwin Clematis is easy to grow in moist, well-drained soil with average fertility and full sun or partial shade. For best flowering and overall performance, we suggest a minimum of 5 hours of direct sunlight daily. Though it tolerates dry periods when established, it will appreciate occasional supplemental water during prolonged periods of dry weather. See the pruning instructions just below.
Clematis Pruning Group 2
Clematis Pruning Group 2
Clematis in Group 2 consists of all the early, large-flowered hybrid clematis that bloom in late spring or early summer and maybe again in late summer. Clematis in this group should be pruned lightly in late winter or early spring. Pruning consists of removing weak and crossing shoots, then thinning down the plant to a structure of evenly spaced one and two-year-old stems. Cut each stem just above a pair of healthy buds.
