Description

Much like the ever-popular Green Giant Arborvitae in form and size, ‘Zebrina’ is a variegated selection which produces shimmering feathery green foliage striped with creamy golden yellow. Retaining its foliage color throughout the year, from a distance the tree looks like a soft and glowing tall pyramid, which can reach 30 to 50 feet in height and 10 to 12 feet wide at its base over time. Upon closer observation the fantastic striped banding in the leaves is more apparent, hence the common name. The foliage color is brightest with 6 or more hours of sunlight per day. Definitely not your typical Arborvitae, Zebrina is sure to be a standout and conversation piece as a specimen or grouping in the landscape, where it is especially nice against a dark woodland backdrop.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing 30 to 50 feet tall and 10 to 12 feet wide at maturity, the Zebrina Western Red Cedar is ideal for use as a specimen or in groupings in sunny to lightly shaded landscape and woodland borders. A dark background really shows of the variegation in the foliage. Can also be used as an accent or grouping in mixed privacy screen plantings or to frame the corners of tall homes and other structures. It also grows well in pots and other containers where it serves as a unique centerpiece with foliage that contrasts nicely with flowers and other plants. A fine addition to conifer gardens, native plant gardens and rock gardens.

Growing Preferences

The Zebrina Western Red Cedar is very easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained soil of average fertility and full sun to light shade. We suggest 6 hours or more of direct sunlight per day for the brightest foliage color. Somewhat drought tolerant when established but will appreciate supplemental water during prolonged periods of summer drought. No pruning is necessary.
